MONOGRAM MAYHEM

It's official, monograms are now in fashion once again.  Yet monograms have always been a part of the preppy game of identifications.  It was Lisa Birnbach who said it best in the "Official Preppy Handbook," 31 years ago, "Preppies have known it for years: who needs LV or YSL when you can lay claim to a discreet EBW III."  Preppies are fiercely proud of their backgrounds and their names in particular, so much so that they will proudly display monograms on just about anything.

Of course, Preps understand that monograms must be used tastefully. The adage of less is more must have been written by a preppy.  You will never find a monogram on denim, tennis balls, gardens or the latest fad--automobiles.

Their usual "modus operandi" are eyeglass cases, golf bags, clothing, bags, rings, and many household items.

As to why monograms are suddenly the rage is something of a mystery.  One could possibly explain away monograms current appeal on human beings having an inherit need to display personal identification…possibly, or maybe Preps know what the fashion world is now catching on to…monograms are just plain fun.  O.C.C.Jr.

LANDS' END WOMEN-SPRING/SUMMER REVIEW

Just the other day I finally went rummaging through the spring/summer catalogs that have been piling up. Lands' End Women was the first one I grabbed. I have perused each item especially the new arrivals and am posting what I feel are the off the marks and on the marks.
Let me first say that for the record I like Lands' End. I've always appreciated their classic approach to fashion. But I'll have to admit that I'm fond of Lands' End past more than Land' End present.
Nonetheless, one can still pick up a few good pieces for a good price if you're willing to wade through some stinkers that are passing for true classic clothing.

OFF THE MARK:

V-neck mid weight sweater
At first sight this looks like a very nice sweater.  It has great shape and I love the color.  The only drawback (and this is a big one for me) is that this sweater is 96% acrylic and 4% nylon.  There isn't a thread of cotton to be seen.  This is such an unfortunate trend not only with Lands' End but with many of our staple stores.  As of lately it seems that many of  Land's End products consist of far too many man made materials like acrylic, nylon and spandex, how dreadful.
Short Sleeve Peter Pan Blouse
No explanation is needed for this one.  Peter Pan should never be applied to any female past the age of ten.
Relaxed Pima Polo

All polo shirts aren't created equal.  This pima polo seems a little boxy and there's just too many buttons on the plackard.  I do like the idea of a quality polo without a logo but this isn't it.  In terms of that classic polo feel it's better to stick with Ralph Lauren.

ON THE MARK:

The Merriweather Trench coat

I really like this trench.  It's fully lined, lightweight and can be worn with or without the belt.  I love the fact that it's machine washable and the checkered design is spring ready.

original pattern no iron pin point shirt
I may get some complaints but I see no problem with a no iron shirt.  I like the fact that this shirt is 100% cotton and the gingham design is a nice touch.

Chino Bermuda Shorts
I'm crazy about a woman in Chino Bermudas and these fair pretty well.
3/4 sleeve combed cotton roll neck sweater
This sweater is neither on the mark or off the mark.  It is sort of straddling the fence.  The only thing(s) I don't like about this sweater is the fact that its 3/4 sleeve and is precisely 93% super-combed cotton, 4% nylon and 3% Lycra.
women button front pattern skirt
I like this skirt.  It is very spring, fun and whimsical.
classic ballet flats
If you want a really inexpensive flat at just $49.50 these are the ones to get.  According to my wife they are pillow soft inside and don't cut into her heels like many others.
Tretorn Tennis
They're Tretorns, enough said!

I'll have to be honest, I'm not particularly blown away by the spring/summer catalog but I am loyal.  I just hope that in the end Lands' End and many our other staple stores will be as loyal to us the consumers.

The Preppy Times

THE SIGNET RING

Signet rings were once used as a sign of personal identity. The ring would bear a family crest or coat of arms, and the bearer could stamp the ring upon hot wax to sign a document or seal a letter -- producing a "signature." Today, signet rings are no longer used for this purpose, but they can still convey identity. Often bearing a coat of arms or the crest of a clan, signet rings are a sign of family history and tradition.

History
Signet rings originated in ancient Rome. The etiquette governing these rings used to dictate that finger rings could be worn only by those of a certain rank, and a signet ring must be removed from the wearer's finger upon his death. It was considered bad taste to wear more than one ring. Signet rings could depict an individual's personality rather than their family. For example, Emperor Pompey wore a ring that displayed a lion carrying a sword.

The etiquette of wearing signet rings varies around the world. In Belgium, men and women both wear signet rings upon the little finger of their left hand. In Switzerland, men wear signet rings upon the ring finger of their right hand, while in France, men use the ring finger of their left hand, and women use the little finger of their left hand.

Significance

Whether or not a signet ring conveys nobility, or even royalty, it can still have significance today. Etiquette governing signet rings in the United States is far from strict--it is usual for the ring to be worn on the little finger of whichever hand is used least, for both men and women--but a ring can still be sign of family, nobility, and loyalty. It is even possible
to revert to the customs of Ancient Rome and use the ring to display not a family crest but an individual's personality.

Traditions

In certain situations, it is important to know the correct etiquette concerning signet rings. For example, when meeting the pope, it is polite to kiss his signet ring (known as the papal ring, or the Ring of the Fisherman). Not to do so, unless the pope initiates a handshake, is a sign of grave disrespect. Strict etiquette also
suggests that it is necessary to kiss the signet rings of certain members of European nobility on being introduced, but this has largely fallen
out of practice.

In terms of its classic appeal, gold is the most prized with traditionalists. Of course, platinum or even silver is very acceptable. Classic men do not mix and match so if you have a wedding band or ring of said precious metals, then keep the signet the same.

Finally yet importantly never ever, ever, ever wear a signet in conjunction with another ring on the same hand. Not only will you run the risk of looking like a pimp but also you will be noted as a person of questionable taste.

Until next time!

THE BRITISH GUERNSEY

Guernseys are great jumpers that embody classic, nautical and preppy. Originally worn by men it is now a unisex item, much like the Irish Aran Sweaters.

Guernsey (or gansey) sweaters have a long history. They date back to the sixteenth century, when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne of England. The New World of the Americas was being opened up and the courageous fishermen of Guernsey began to develop fisheries off the coast of Labrador, Canada. To pursue this perilous occupation, the fishermen needed warm and windproof clothing. The skilled knitters of Guernsey developed their now-famous Guernsey Sweater. At the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Admiral Lord Nelson ordered that the Guernsey be adopted as part of the uniform of the Royal Navy, and it was worn at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Many members of England’s Royal Family have owned a Guernsey sweater.

Guernsey Characteristics
Guernsey sweaters have certain characteristics that define them. These hardwearing work clothes typically fit close to the body, accentuate the shoulders, and elongate the waist. Their reinforced gussets are diamond shaped, and the sweaters are traditionally knit from the top down as that allows for easier repairs on the arms and elbows. Guernseys are steeped in tradition, and are knitted only from pure, new, tightly-wound British oiled wool or American cotton. True Guernsey fashion calls for the use of 5-ply inky, blue-black wool. The colors are further dyed using dyes from plants to create indigo, brown, grey, purple, gray-blue, or cream, un-dyed fleece products. The idea is to imitate the fishermen's natural working environment of the sea and sky. Some Guernsey Sweaters are plainly knitted, but others incorporate sea-related patterns, with cable or motif designs. These differ from knitter to knitter, and area to area. A Guernsey is designed for longevity, with identical patterns on the front and back of the sweater. This means the jumper can be worn both ways if excessive wear occurs, such as on the elbows. The average knitted adult Guernsey is knitted on US size 1 (2.25mm) needles, and is done to a gauge of 32 stitches by 36 rows or 4 inches. It weighs approximately one kilogram or a little over two pounds. They are seamless, having been knitted "in the round", using four or five double-ended steel wires or pins.

Poor Man's Wealth
Design Guernseys often have what is known as a “poor man’s wealth” pattern. This pattern is called as such because its makers knit several rows of purl stitches within it that are quite difficult to count. This technique produces a garment that appears to have many more stitches than it actually does.

Two photos of my guernsey. You can see the diamond pattern underarm, used for ease of motion.

RALPH LAUREN FALL PREVIEW 2010

Here is a highlight of Ralph Lauren's fall preview. Although not classic prep, the line is feminine and very stylish. I find that it's a fine idea to take classic pieces and mix and match.

TREND WATCH

It's all about glamour ladies. Here are my favorite picks. Of course the appropriate footwear is necessary. I like the idea of substituting Ralph's boots with say a nice riding boot, but that's just me. Enjoy

His latest handbag is called the Ricki Bag. It is inspired by his wife. Ralph said that he was never attracted to the girl with the make-up and high heels. He was attracted to the girl with jeans and the white shirt. The girl who wore her boyfriends jacket. And that was the girl he married. I thought that was sweet. Anyway, here is first look at the Ricki Bag. Tell me what you think.

See you soon.

PREPPY ESSENTIALS FOR WOMEN SPRING/SUMMER 2010

Well finally spring is here and you know what that means.  It's time to put away the pea coat, scarves and foul weather gear.  I wanted to do a post just for women preppy clothing.  Men will be next.  Preppy spring essentials are exciting this year.  So let's jump right in shall we?

Nothing says spring like a cool polo shirt, yes?
These three polo's are from the Vineyard Vines collection.  The one on top is the classic polo.  The pink one is the sleeveless pique polo.  The next one is a polo dress.  They all come in different colors and like all of Vineyard Vines Clothing, they are very durable and adorable.

Here is more from Vineyard Vines.  We have the Out to Sea Sundress, the Sailor Twill Skirt, the Seersucker Classic Skirt and despite it's name the Wale Tail Shorts.  Two of my favorites are the Seaton Dress and the Schooner Dress.  Last but not least, for those chilly mornings, the Sea Island Cardigan.  They're tres preppy.

You know a lovely alternative to a ribbon belt is to opt for a scarf or tie.  This example is from Vineyard Vines.
LL Bean's new line called Signature has some nice ensembles.  I will discuss LL Bean Signature Line in a later post.  Here are in my opinion some must haves:

At the top we have the Belted Twill Jacket, paired with the Mariner Denim Striped Sailor Pants.  Next is the Day sail Striped Turtleneck paired with Twill Bermuda Shorts.  This too cute outfit is the Chambray Wrap Skirt, Cashmere Tee and espadrille wedge.  Lastly, and one of my favorites is the Piped Wrap Dress.

Ralph Lauren, a favorite among preps since the eighties has great outfits for spring.  They are versatile, sexy and most of all cute.  These photos are from his Blue Label and Ralph Lauren Rugby.  From top to bottom-Paisley Halter Jersey Dress, Cotton Sea Scout Sweater, McLear Georgette Dress, Vell Jersey Necklace Dress, and the Classic Stretch Satin Trench.  The last look is very chic, very metropolitan.  It's a very nice look but to me you have to be a certain type to pull it off if you understand what I mean.  You can find these on the Ralph Lauren Link.

What's summer without a tube dress ladies?  So let's rock it huh?  Lilli has some very colorful and classical dresses like these.....

And by all means, don't forget that all too famous preppy pattern....the madras.  They just make you happy don't they?

Let's take a look at footwear.  When the weather gets warmer, we don't always have to put on the old standby.....the flip flop.  Spring is a good excuse to get yourself in step.

These lime green and white ballet flats are just tooo cute and oh so preppy.  You can find them at http://www.bypaige.com/

Looking for an all purpose spring shoe that can handle the elements? LL Bean has got you covered.  Here is a number that every woman should have.  The vacation land sport Mary Jane and water shoe.  There are more colors and can be found on the LL BEAN link.

Looking for the original spring boat shoe?  The http://www.sperrytopsiders.com/ has two that I love.  First the original boat shoe and the canvas mule.

Another good summer shoe is the espadrille.  One examples is from http://www.preppypinkprincess.blogspot.com/

Another example is from  http://www.nordstom.com/  It's the Burburry Ankle Tie Leather Espadrille.

These last sexy numbers I threw in for good measure.  You can never have to many shoes.  And after all it's always fun to play around with them.  I'm not sure who makes these shoes but they were just too lovely to pass up.

Can you believe it?  Exclusive Jack Rogers thong sandal in Nantucket Red fabric, bone leather thong and sole.  in sizes 5 to 11 medium.  They look great with skirts, dresses, capris and jeans.

We all know that nothing says spring/summer like a cool pair of flip flops.  I'm always looking for the coolest pair.  Enter V.V. and Nantucket Noose.  These are my favorite places for flips.  Check them out.

These are over sand permit flips from Nantucket Noose.  I have this exact pair and love them.  They are unisex and if hubby or boyfriend is a bit flamboyant, get them.  After you've gotten a pair for yourself of course.

V.V. Pin whale Flips.  Cute huh?

V.V. Nantucket Signs Flips.

V.V. Seahorse Flips.  You can count on the Vine giving you fun, sporty and whimsical items.

Personally I think there is nothing more feminine than a woman with a headband.  Not to mention they scream spring and can add color to any wardrobe.  At the http://www.thecreativecupcake.com/ you can buy some very creative and colorful headbands at a very nice price.  The Hyannis, The Nantucket and The Westport are my favorites.
I threw this pic in because it was sooooooooooooo cute and very well done.

What could be cuter than a ribbon watchband to tie your ensemble together.  Check these winners out.

This is a fine example over on www.threechickadees.com  They have everything.  From belts and headbands, to key chains and clothing.

If you want a watchband that's a little dressier, there's a site that can handle that.  They're called www.kamsewunique.com.  They even have watchbands in velvet.  Here's an example of their work.

Lastly, while out and about, you need to carry all your necessities right.  Well what could be more preppy than a tote.  And while you're at it, have the darn thing monogrammed.   First we have the Sunwashed Tote that can be paired with just about anything.  The Madras and the Open Top Boat and Toted.  They're all from LL Bean.  Check my links area.  They also do monograms

Yes spring is here and hopefully you're all ready.  I know I am.  I hope everyone has a safe and preppy spring.  If you have any fashion choices of your own to contribute, by all means do so.  See ya soon.
